Types of spinal cord injuries a person may experience in a crash

A car accident can change your life in an instant, especially if you suffered a serious injury in the crash. Spinal cord injuries are a common result of serious auto collisions, and they have the ability to leave an Illinois victim unable to work, move, walk or function independently.

If you suffered a spinal cord injury in a car accident, it's likely that you are experiencing pain, limitations and other issues. There are different types and degrees of severity with spinal cord injuries, but any damage to the spine is serious. You may find it helpful to learn more about your injury and your recovery needs if you determine it is beneficial to move forward with a personal injury claim in the future.

Types of spinal cord injuries

A car accident is a physically traumatic event. When one or two moving vehicles collide with each other, it can result in serious physical injury to the people inside the vehicles. The spine can suffer injuries when there is a fracture, rupture or damage in some way to the bone protection around the spine. This can result in effects that range from minor pain to complete paralysis. Some of the most common types of spine injuries include:

  • Cervical spinal cord injury – Because of the location of these types of injuries, this can cause weakness or paralysis in either the arms, legs or both. It can also affect the control a person has over movement of the head, shoulders, head and diaphragm.
  • Thoracic spinal cord injury – These are not as common because of the protection provided by the rib cage. This injury can cause paraplegia, respiratory problems, sexual dysfunction and problems with the muscles in the abdomen and back.
  • Sacral spinal cord injury – This injury can result in bladder and bowel function problems as well as weakness or paralysis in the hips and legs and lower parts of the body.

In spinal cord injuries, they are either complete or incomplete. Incomplete injuries leave victims with some function, not completely disrupting the body's ability to transmit messages back and forth across the location of the injury. A complete injury results in total loss of function, movement and feeling below the point of injury.

What can you do?

If your injury is the result of the negligent or reckless actions of another person, you have the right to seek recompense through a personal injury claim. Through this option for legal recourse, you can seek what you need for recovery and support both now and well into the future.
