The time change could be a hazard to your health

When the time changes in the spring, it results in more daylight hours, and it's a clear indication that summer is just around the corner. Many people in Illinois look forward to this, but they also know that this means they will lose an hour of sleep. By moving the clocks ahead, everyone gets one less hour of rest in a night.

This lost hour doesn't just affect a person for that one night or the next morning. The time change can affect a person for weeks as he or she adjusts to new sleep patterns and driving in the mornings when it's darker. Because of these reasons, there is a spike in fatal car accidents following the week after the time change.

What's the big deal?

To learn more about the way that the time change affects drivers, experts looked at the rate of fatal accidents. They found that in the week following the spring time change, there was a spike of around 6% in the overall number of crashes that resulted in at least one death. This may be concerning to you as the time changes soon, especially if you have to commute in the mornings.

A large percentage of these accidents take place before noon, which means that many commuters are especially tired while driving in the mornings. After the time changes, it's darker in the morning, and people are driving after getting less sleep. The combination of these things can be dangerous. In fact, many believe the higher chance of car accidents is just one of the reasons that the government should do away with the time change altogether.

Sleepy drivers are dangerous drivers

When a person is tired, it is harder to make smart choices behind the wheel. Drowsy driving can lead to difficulty processing information and reacting to hazards. A tired driver is more likely to swerve, fall asleep behind the wheel, drive through an intersection and drift between lanes.

Are you a victim?

If you suffered an injury in a car accident caused by a drowsy driver, you have options. Each person is responsible for knowing when he or she is unable to drive safely or may be endangering others. If you believe you are the victim of the reckless or negligent choices of someone else, you may have grounds to move forward with a personal injury claim. This allows you to pursue recompense for your losses and fight for the recovery you deserve.
