Why would your doctor order an emergency C-section?

Women have been having babies for centuries, eons in fact. It is one of the most natural processes in nature. So, when you found out you were pregnant, you probably never thought that you would have anything but a normal experience. You may expect swollen feet, food cravings and mood swings, but other than that, you didn't expect anything serious.

However, you could experience complications that would make your pregnancy anything but normal, especially as you reach your due date. These complications could arise quickly and require you to forgo a natural birth.

Reasons for an emergency C-section

Below are the most often seen reasons why your doctor would order an emergency C-section:

  • If your baby is in the breech position, the chances of a C-section are high, primarily due to your baby being in distress or due to cord prolapse.
  • If the umbilical cord falls through your cervix, called cord prolapse, you will need an emergency C-section since uterine contractions could cut off the blood flow to your baby.
  • If the placenta separates from your uterine wall, it could seriously limit the oxygen your baby receives, which would necessitate a C-section.
  • It's rare, but if your uterus ruptures, it puts both you and your baby in danger. You could hemorrhage, and your baby could lose oxygen. This situation requires immediate medical intervention.
  • If your baby is in distress, it means he or she is not receiving an adequate amount of oxygen, and a C-section would hasten delivery in order to correct the problem.
  • Your labor could stop progressing or slow to the point where the best option is to deliver the baby via C-section.
  • You could have or develop a medical condition, such as diabetes, genital herpes or preeclampsia, that makes a C-section the safest option for both you and your baby.
  • If your baby has a birth defect or you are having multiple babies, a C-section may be the best option to ensure the safety of you and your baby or babies.

As you can see, there are a variety of reasons why you would need an emergency C-section. It is the responsibility of the medical staff attending you to monitor you and your baby in order to look for signs of any of the above complications, among others. If anyone in the chain fails to perform his or her duties efficiently and properly, you and/or your baby could suffer serious injuries.

If your doctor waits too long to deliver your baby through a C-section, it may be that you did not receive the standard of care to which you deserve. If you and/or your baby suffered serious harm as a result, you may have the opportunity to seek compensation through the filing of a medical malpractice claim.
