What you need to know about the risk of spinal cord injury

A serious injury can change a person's life in many ways. From the medical bills to the physical impairment, it can have a far-reaching effect into multiple areas of a person's daily activities and financial security. This is particularly true for individuals who suffered a spinal cord injury.

Injuries to the spine can be particularly serious, often causing permanent damage. There are different types of injuries to the spine, but an Illinois victim can experience difficult circumstances emotionally, physically, financially and mentally as they seek to adjust to their new normal. If you or a loved one suffered an injury to this part of the body, it may be helpful to learn more about the potential impacts and what you can do as you try and put your life back together.

What happens after a spinal cord injury?

An injury to the spine includes damage to the actual spinal cord or the nerves surrounding this part of the body. A person who experiences this may have decreased sensation, limited mobility and intense pain. There are two main types of spine injury: incomplete and complete. The difference between the two include:

  • Incomplete -- With this type of injury, a person will have some sensation and movement below the point of impact. There can be varying degrees of mobility and feeling with an incomplete spinal cord injury.
  • Complete -- With this type of injury, a person will have complete loss of sensation and movement below the point of impact. A person with a complete injury may have some movement but may not be able to control it.

Most often, these injuries happen because of some sort of traumatic accident. This may be because of a car accident or fall that affects the back or head. A person may be unaware of a serious injury until he or she notices a worsening of the physical abilities and motor function.

Your recovery

Sometimes, the impact of a spinal cord injury is irreversible. This can be devastating, but it is possible for a victim to go on to live a normal and productive life. If your injury was the result of the negligent or reckless actions of another person, you could have grounds to pursue financial compensation through a personal injury claim. This restitution can help you address your financial concerns and get you the help you need to move forward.
