What are the different types of fractures?

Bone fractures in Illinois can be serious injuries. This is especially true if the fracture occurs in one of the bones of your leg. The severity of your bone fracture depends on several different factors.

According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, there are several different classifications of bone fractures. Categorization takes place according to the direction of the fracture, the number of pieces and whether the surface of the skin breaks.

Stable fracture

A stable fracture occurs when the bone breaks but the pieces do not become displaced. The pieces still line up together correctly, even though the bone has broken.

Oblique fracture

The fracture line demonstrates an angled pattern relative to the bone. This is visible on x-ray.

Transverse fracture

The break in the bone appears on x-rays as a horizontal line.

Comminuted fracture

Unlike other types of fractures, a comminuted fracture breaks in several different places at once, resulting in three or more bone fragments. It can be difficult to repair a comminuted fracture because of the necessity of putting all the bone fragments in place at the same time and immobilizing them until they have a chance to heal.

Open fracture

Also referred to as a compound fracture, this type occurs when the injury also breaks the surface of the skin. Sometimes it is the blow that causes the skin wound, while other times the impact forces the bone fragment through the skin. Your physician must take care in treating an open fracture because the broken skin puts you at risk for infection.

Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid were very professional and easy to talk to. Prior to working with them, my wife and I had no real experience with the legal system beyond a house closing, yet Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid explained the whole process to us very well. I knew that whenever I had a concern about our case or the legal system in general I could call their office or send an email and receive answers the same day... -Larry

  5. "Provided very wise advice"

I've dealt with attorneys on a variety of issues, almost all of them since leaving college and entering the workplace. Mr. Mathys was the first attorney I had any real experience with, and I was impressed then and remain so. He provided very wise advice and always kept me informed. In the end, he delivered a favorable result. I recommend him highly.

  7. "They went to bat for me"

Not long ago I was involved in a car accident where I was hit by a gravel truck at an intersection. After I called Mathys & Schneid, even though I didn't have a very large case, they made me feel like I was one of their most important cases. They went to bat for me with the trucking company's insurance and got me a settlement. I would definitely recommend them to my family and friends. -Dan H.
