How often are work zones a factor in car accidents?

Road construction zones are all but unavoidable in Illinois, and while these work zones can slow you down and make you late, they can also cause far more serious issues. Work zones are a common factor in many of the nation’s car accidents and associated injuries and deaths, and there are several reasons why work zones prove particularly hazardous for today’s drivers.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration, work zone crashes are on the rise across the nation, increasing an alarming 42 percent between 2013 and 2015. Furthermore, in 2014, 669 people lost their lives in road construction zones, accounting for 2 percent of all roadway fatalities that year.

Just what sorts of dangers do work zones present? Part of the reason construction zones are so hazardous is because the dangers found in them are two-fold. First, the very fact that road construction is underway presents obvious hazards. Uneven payment, unclear traffic patterns and decreased visibility are just a few of the things that can get in your way in work zones, increasing your odds of an accident.

Second, even if you are paying close attention to these and other hazards while making your way through a work zone, other motorists may not be doing the same. When other drivers are already, say, speeding or driving under the influence, work zones can compound the risks associated with doing so, placing you and anyone else travelling within these zones in jeopardy.
