Easy ways to reduce risk of injury for a motorcycle accident

Motorcyclists have a much higher risk of suffering an injury in an accident than someone in a regular car. There is also a higher likelihood of a fatality taking place, such as one occurrence that recently took place in Illinois where a motorcyclist in Little Falls lost his life after a collision.

Therefore, it is in every motorcyclist’s best interest to take steps to reduce the chances of an accident occurring. With some of these tips, motorcyclists can even reduce the severity of injury in the event that an accident takes place.

Gain more training

A large percentage of motorcyclists taught themselves how to ride or learned from a family member or friend. However, to become a more defensive rider, it is best to take a class or two to learn valuable skills. These drivers should take new classes every time they get a new motorcycle because each bike rides differently.

Wear more protective gear than simply a helmet

Every motorcyclist needs to wear a helmet, but proper protection involves a lot more than just that. Motorcyclists should also wear protective, visible clothing. This can simply include long pants and long-sleeve shirts because if the rider has any skin exposed, then it can result in significant injury even if the accident is not that severe. Most professionals suggest wearing clothing made from Kevlar or leather because it adds an extra layer of protection. Riders should also wear a full face shield. During nighttime riding, motorcyclists need to wear brightly-colored or reflective clothes.

Avoid lane splitting

The act of lane splitting is actually illegal in Illinois. This is the practice of driving between two lanes of cars, and it is extremely dangerous. One reason why it is dangerous is that cars may not see you between lanes, and a car could try to merge lanes when a motorcycle approaches. Not only could this practice result in a ticket, it could result in serious injury.
