Incident with Chicago woman shows suddenness of some dog attacks

Most people who go on walks or hikes rarely consider the possibility of a dog attack occurring out of nowhere. Unfortunately for many in Illinois and across the country, this type of scenario is a possibility. People and other pets can be bitten by dogs that are under the control of their owners, but sometimes dangerous dogs are loose on the streets with no owner in sight. When this happens, the results can be devastating.

Reportedly, a 68-year-old woman was walking across the street in Chicago recently when two pit bulls came “from nowhere,” according to a man who tried to help her, and began attacking her in the street. The Good Samaritan first attempted hitting the dogs with his car, then exited his vehicle and tried to lure them off the woman by hitting them with bricks.

The dogs would not relent in their attack until police officers arrived. One dog was shot, and both were taken into custody by animal control officers. The woman was hospitalized in serious condition, but the extent of her injuries was not reported. Authorities are searching for the dogs’ owner, but as of yet, the responsible party has not been located.

It is to be hoped that the victim makes a full recovery. As residents are aware, pit bull bites and attacks from other large dogs are often fatal. However, a dog of any size can leave serious wounds and can kill adults and children. Dog owners are responsible for keeping their pets under control at all times. If they fail to take reasonable precautions to protect others, they may be held liable.

  4. "Easy to talk to"

Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid were very professional and easy to talk to. Prior to working with them, my wife and I had no real experience with the legal system beyond a house closing, yet Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid explained the whole process to us very well. I knew that whenever I had a concern about our case or the legal system in general I could call their office or send an email and receive answers the same day... -Larry
