4 common emergency room mistakes

When you go to the emergency room, you expect to receive prompt and effective treatment. Unfortunately, you may fall victim to medical mistakes in the emergency department. Emergency room errors are surprisingly common-there are as many as ten million mistakes in emergency rooms each year.

This is a troubling statistic. When you seek emergency treatment, the last thing you want is more harm done to you. There are a variety of potential mistakes that may endanger your health and safety. Here are some common types.

1. Misdiagnosis

Diagnosis errors are common in the busy environments of emergency rooms. Misdiagnoses include failure to diagnose your condition, giving you the wrong diagnosis or failing to order the necessary diagnostic tests. Failing to receive treatment or getting treatment for the wrong condition may result in severe health complications.

2. Medication mistakes

The doctor or nurse may give you medications to treat your emergency injury or illness. Something may go wrong during the process of prescribing and administering medication due to a misdiagnosis or breakdown in communication. Potential errors include administering the incorrect drugs, prescribing the wrong medication or mixing medications with adverse reactions.

3. Improper discharge

When it is time for you to leave the emergency room, you should receive complete instructions. The staff must inform you about any ongoing treatment or medications. Your doctor should also follow up with you. Sometimes patients also get discharged prematurely. These mistakes often happen because emergency departments are hectic, but everyone must still adhere to the proper standard of care.

4. Delay in treatment

What may start as a small medical problem may turn severe if you do not receive treatment in a timely manner. If you are left untreated for hours in the emergency room, your condition may worsen.

If you are the victim of any of these errors, you may be able to sue the emergency department doctor with the help of a medical malpractice lawyer.

  4. "Easy to talk to"

Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid were very professional and easy to talk to. Prior to working with them, my wife and I had no real experience with the legal system beyond a house closing, yet Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid explained the whole process to us very well. I knew that whenever I had a concern about our case or the legal system in general I could call their office or send an email and receive answers the same day... -Larry

  5. "Provided very wise advice"

I've dealt with attorneys on a variety of issues, almost all of them since leaving college and entering the workplace. Mr. Mathys was the first attorney I had any real experience with, and I was impressed then and remain so. He provided very wise advice and always kept me informed. In the end, he delivered a favorable result. I recommend him highly.

Mark [Schneid] is an excellent and skilled attorney and demonstrated in-depth knowledge of the law when he helped settle my dog bite lawsuit resulting from a traumatic incident. He explained what was needed of me and how I should handle the situation in a professional manner.

  7. "They went to bat for me"

Not long ago I was involved in a car accident where I was hit by a gravel truck at an intersection. After I called Mathys & Schneid, even though I didn't have a very large case, they made me feel like I was one of their most important cases. They went to bat for me with the trucking company's insurance and got me a settlement. I would definitely recommend them to my family and friends. -Dan H.
