Watch out for drunk drivers around the holidays

In many towns and cities across the country, law enforcement officials often increase their patrols during the holiday season. Since drinking tends to increase around holidays, given the high number of celebrations and parties, there are often more checkpoints and officers engaged in looking for drunk driving to protect those on the road.

That being the case, if you live in or around Naperville and happen to take the risk of driving under the influence around the holidays, or any time of year for that matter, you are running the risk of arrest. While the best practice is to never get behind the wheel if you have had any alcohol to drink, statistics show that in Naperville and the surrounding area, there will be drunk drivers on the road.

Labor Day campaign

One example of the Naperville police's effort to crack down on drunk drivers was through their "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign during the Labor Day holiday in 2017. The Chicago Tribune reported that Naperville police arrested five people for a DUI as part of the campaign. Increased patrols for the holiday also resulted in increased citations for other violations such as not wearing a seatbelt, speeding and distracted driving. The Naperville Police Department has been one of the top five Illinois law enforcement agencies for DUI arrests for sixteen years running, according to a June 2017 article in the Chicago Tribune.

The truth of the matter is that even as law enforcement steps up patrols around holiday weekends and seasons, the chances you may be in a motor vehicle crash is also high. A crash that results in an injury is particularly serious and could lead to any number of complications in addition to the pain and suffering of your injury, including lost wages and high medical bills.

What to do if you are in a crash

If a drunk driver hits you and you suffer an injury as a result of the crash, you may be able to seek damages under the law. For example, if the drunk driver in your case does not have insurance, you may worry you do not have any legal recourse.

One of the most effective ways to find out if you have a case is to consult with an attorney who has experience in personal injury cases in the Naperville area. A qualified lawyer can examine the particulars of your individual case to determine an appropriate strategy that may help you to recoup lost wages or fight insurance companies to pay medical bills.
