Where your injury case is all that matters

3 of the most dangerous medications

Anybody who has seen a TV commercial for a medication knows well that they often come with a litany of side effects. While this is true of nearly all prescription drugs, some are certainly more deserving of caution than others.

According to Harvard University's Center for Ethics, approximately 128,000 people die each year from complications caused by prescription drugs. Even when prescribed by a doctor, medication can be dangerous, and these drugs are some of the deadliest you might encounter.

Prednisone and cortisone

Prednisone and cortisone are steroids commonly used to treat diseases and other conditions that cause inflammation in a patient. The side effects should not be taken lightly, though. These medications can also cause high blood pressure, fluid retention, intestinal bleeding and osteoporosis, just to name a few of the risks. This is why doctors typically prescribe it temporarily, but if they extend the prescription, continual exposure can be seriously harmful.

Cholesterol-lowering medications

Americans' average cholesterol levels have gradually risen over the years, and a national panic has motivated many patients and doctors alike to seek out medications that mitigate high cholesterol. It is questionable whether or not such drugs are even necessary as there is conflicting research on the implications of high cholesterol. It is clear, though, that these medications are not without risk: they may increase risk of stroke, inflammation and liver toxicity.

Anti-depressants and anxiety medicine

Many people imagine psychotropic drugs to be relatively harmless, but this is unfortunately untrue. One of the greatest risks associated with medications such as Xanax and Prozac is their addictive potential. This can cause withdrawals for patients who reduce their dosage or elect to go off the drugs altogether. Other side effects include insomnia, vomiting, muscle cramps and increased anxiety.

If a physician prescribed medication that has proved harmful to your health or the health of a loved one, you should be aware of your legal rights. Contact an attorney for more information.
