More vehicles recalled due to Takata airbag problems

Three German carmakers announced the recall of 2.5 million cars in the United States. The affected vehicles have problematic Takata Corp. airbags, which run the risk of exploding and shooting metal fragments into the cars. So far, 24 million vehicles with Takata airbags have already been recalled since the issue was first made public in 2009.

The automakers in this most recent recall were Volkswagen, BMW and Daimler. Volkswagen said that it will be recalling 850,000 cars, BMW said that it will be recalling 840,000 cars, and Daimler said that it will be recalling 840,000 cars.

These recalls relate to an announcement by Takata last month, where it identified another 5.1 million cars previously thought to be safe that are currently in the United States and have airbag problems. Now that BMW, Volkswagen and Daimler have added their vehicles into the mix, all 5.1 million of the vehicles referenced by Takata last month have officially been recalled.

Fortunately, all three German automakers say that no airbag-related accidents or injuries have been reported in their cars so far. However, deaths and injuries have been reported concerning motorists in other brands of vehicles. The most recent death involved a Ford Ranger pickup truck. Ten deaths have been attributed to the airbags worldwide -- nine of which happened in the United States.

Illinois drivers who suspect that they or their loved ones were hurt or killed by Takata airbags could have strong claims to seek financial restitution in court. By speaking with a personal injury attorney, injured parties (and family members of deceased persons) can evaluate whether they have a viable claim for financial damages in this regard.
