1 dead, 5 injured in fatal Illinois collision

A tragic car accident happened in Beloit, Illinois, on a recent Friday evening. According to the local police department, the collision killed one man and injured five people. As of last reports, authorities were investigating the incident to discover exactly what may have happened.

At this point, authorities believe that a car with four individuals inside it was heading northbound when it was struck by a second car that was heading westbound. The second car had two people inside it. The accident happened at approximately 8:08 p.m.

Police say that the second vehicle struck the first because it drove through a stop sign at an intersection. No one escaped injury. Five of those involved in the crash ended up in the hospital and one man, who was likely over 60 years of age, died at the crash site. The five injured victims are not believed to have suffered fatal injuries.

According to a police sergeant from the Beloit Police Department, they suspect that alcohol or intoxication of some kind was to blame for the crash. However, the matter is still under investigation and authorities planned to take a blood sample from the at-fault driver.

Police investigations are an essential element of determining fault in any kind of an accident. In cases where a driver proceeds through a red light or stop sign without stopping, it is imperative that police look deeper to determine if any other laws were broken that caused the at-fault driver to fail to stop -- such as inebriation or intoxication, for example.

If it is determined an Illinois driver was intoxicated, and that led him or her to drive through a red light and cause a fatal accident, then the prosecution will have more serious claims against the driver. Those charges can come with more serious criminal consequences. Furthermore, family members of the deceased victim will have a stronger case for pursuing financial compensation from the intoxicated driver.
