Salmonella outbreak triggers nation-wide recall of frozen chicken

A major manufacturer of frozen chicken products, Aspen Foods, has announced the recall of over 500,000 pounds of frozen chicken. The recall was instituted as a safety measure to prevent the spread of Salmonella poisoning. The recall was announced on Oct. 2 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and its Food Safety and Inspection Service.

This recall follows another Salmonella-related recall announced by Aspen Foods several months ago. In that recall, the frozen food maker removed 1,978,680 pounds of chicken from circulation. So far, five people have suffered from Salmonella poisoning after consuming Aspen Foods products.

This more recent recall was instituted after the Food Safety and Inspection Service investigated Aspen Foods products in more detail. The regulator found that more frozen products should be recalled due to prior contact with the original source of contamination. This triggered the additional Oct. 2 recall.

Aspen Foods products are distributed throughout the nation. Affected products have "best if used by" dates ranging from Aug. 23, 2016 through Dec. 15, 2016. The frozen chicken is packaged under a wide variety of brand names, so it is important to check with the Aspen Foods website before eating frozen chicken products with these "best if used by" dates.

Illinois residents who suspect they were made seriously ill by Salmonella-infected chicken made by Aspen Foods may have viable defective product litigation claims. Depending on the facts surrounding the case, if verifiable evidence exists that serious Salmonella illness was caused by a particular food product, then the manufacturer of that product could be liable for financial damages stemming from the sickness.
