What To Do Right After Being Involved in a Car Accident

Even though car accidents are relatively common, the everyday driver does not expect to be in a crash whenever he or she gets behind the wheel. This is why many people feel unprepared and confused in the first few minutes after a car accident. Should you talk to the other driver? Should you call the police? Should you call for an ambulance? Knowing what to do immediately after an accident could simplify your future personal injury claim.

Right after a crash, you should see if you or your passengers need immediate medical assistance. If there are any serious injuries on the scene, call for an ambulance right away. After this step, you should call the police and stay on the scene. The police will speak with everyone involved and generate a police report for the crash. Your personal injury attorney will need to see the police report in order to begin working on your case. While you are waiting for the police to arrive, see if there are any witnesses that you can speak with and have the police interview. Getting as much information about the crash as possible will help solidify any potential personal injury claim.

After calling the police, you should exchange contact and insurance information with the other driver. You can provide this information to the police or your personal injury attorney, which will be used to open the claim. By personally asking for the information, you'll be able to double-check what is given to police and also have some sort of contact information in the event the other driver decides to flee the scene.

If you speak with the other driver, be careful of what you say! Apologizing or admitting something at the scene may be used against you in your future claim. You can be polite and cordial with the other driver, but don't forget that everything said and done during these early stages can affect your future case.

After exchanging information, take photos of the scene. Make sure you get photos of the cars involved, the surrounding area, weather conditions, and anything else you can think of. Your personal injury attorney will help determine which photos will be helpful to your claim.

Lastly, if you were hurt in the crash but turned down an ambulance, you should see a doctor after leaving the scene. If the other driver was at fault and you were hurt as a result, you have a legal right to be compensated for your injuries. Contact a personal injury attorney to get more information on how to make sure your medical bills are paid and that you receive a fair and just amount for all of your injuries.
