Crucial questions about workers' compensation

You may know that most people who work in Illinois are supposed to get workers' compensation, but that doesn't mean you don't have important questions that must be answered. In fact, it's best to get the answers to these questions before you are injured, ensuring that you know exactly what you should do as soon as an injury takes place.

Does a sole proprietor get coverage?

While there's no answer for every situation, it's possible that many sole proprietors will not be covered. Since they are not employed by anyone and work for themselves, there is no overarching company to give them compensation. If you are a sole proprietor, insurance then becomes quite important.

Does coverage provide for lost wages?

The first thing you think of with workers' comp is coverage for medical bills, but don't forget that it takes time to heal. If you're out of the office for a month or two, what are you supposed to do to pay the bills? You'll be glad to know that workers' comp will often pay you for at least a portion of your time out of work.

When should your employer find out you were hurt?

If you're hurt and your employer doesn't know immediately, you need to report it. It's best to do this right away, though your injuries may make this impossible. If so, you want to get that report in as soon as physically possible. The cut-off for when you must make your report is set at 45 days. Make sure that you do not go over this limit.
