On March 20, 2015, Joliet resident Mark Cipolla was struck and killed while standing on the northwest corner of the intersection of Hickory Street and Western Avenue in Joliet by two drivers who were both driving under the influence.
Authorities say that Cipolla, 56, was standing on the sidewalk when a Mazda sedan pulled out of a parking lot onto Western Avenue and struck a Hyundai, causing the Hyundai to lose control and hit Cipolla. Emergency responders freed Cipolla out from underneath the Hyundai and transported him to Provena Saint Joseph Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The drivers of both cars, Jefferson Davis and Oscar Lopez, were arrested for DUI. According to the authorities, Davis, a 21 year-old male from Minooka, was under the influence of alcohol and Lopez was under the influence of cannabis. Lopez’s age has not been made available.
