Boulder Hill students out of hospital after bus crash

Parents worry about their elementary students and find it hard to say goodbye at the beginning of each day with all the potential dangers. Their fears were realized when a Boulder Hill Elementary School bus full of young students was in a major crash on a recent Friday morning.

The crash happened in Montgomery, near Caterpillar Drive and Orchard Road. The bus, carrying 31 elementary school students, was hit by a car. The driver of the car, according to police, had disobeyed a stop light while driving northbound on Orchard Road. At the time the vehicle hit the bus, it had been traveling eastbound through the intersection.

The woman driving the car, 23, was extricated from her vehicle. She was then taken to a facility in Aurora, the Presence Mercy Medical Center. There, she was treated for a number of non-life threatening injuries. She was charged with having disobeyed a traffic control signal and failing to reduce speed to avoid a crash.

Ten students were taken to the hospital and have now been released after undergoing medical examinations and treatment as needed. According a spokeswoman at the hospital, Rush-Copley Medical Center, they are all in good condition.

All parents were notified of the crash on the Friday morning that it happened. Parents of students taken to the hospital were able to get them from there. Some of the parents of other students picked them up that morning anyway, and the rest of the students were taken to the school on a another bus.

This story is a good example of the dangers faced by school buses even when the fault is entirely that of a driver in an oncoming car. Parents of elementary school students may want to talk with their sons and daughters about what they should do if they're ever in a crash. In addition, an attorney can provide guidance when it comes to recouping medical expenses and more.
