A bizarre car accident on October 5, 2014 at 95th and Cicero Avenue in Oak Lawn, Illinois left 3 people dead and several others injured when an 81 year-old man allegedly ran a red light and crossed over into oncoming traffic.
Witnesses say the driver, Edward Carthans, was found at a red light slumped over the steering wheel of his Ford F-150 before allegedly striking multiple vehicles at the intersection of 95th and Keeler Avenue and fleeing the scene. Carthans then allegedly sped through the 95th and Cicero Avenue intersection traveling 80-100 mph and struck several vehicles in the oncoming lanes head-on.
Carthans, along with two others, were killed in the crash. Eleven others were injured, with eight of the victims being treated at the scene. The authorities are still waiting on the results of toxicology reports to determine if any drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
