14-year-old motorcycle passenger from Naperville dies in accident

A 14-year-old Naperville girl is dead after a fatal motorcycle crash in Will County.

According to news reports, the girl was a passenger on a 1995 Honda motorcycle driven by a man in his 50s. Some news reports indicated that the man was the girl's father; others said preliminary reports did not show how the two were related.

The driver told police that he lost control of the bike. It went down, hit a concrete median and skidded. There were no other vehicles involved in the crash.

The girl was dead at the scene. Paramedics took the man to Advocate/Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove.

Illinois State Police are investigating the cause of the accident. Motorcycles crashes happen for many reasons. Often, other drivers simply do not see the motorcyclist. They may collide directly with the motorcycle or the rider may lose control while taking an evasive maneuver to avoid a crash. In one-vehicle crashes, the driver may make an error, but many other factors can cause a crash, including road conditions and bike defects. A thorough investigation can help explain what happened.

Will County has had 32 fatal vehicle crashes so far this year, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. IDOT does not separate the number of fatal motorcycle crashes into that figure.
