What to Expect In Your First Meeting with a Personal Injury Attorney

If you or someone close to you has been injured in a car accident, you should consult with a personal injury attorney as soon as possible and before talking to any insurance adjusters or insurance claims people. Do not waste your time talking with attorneys who are not experienced personal injury attorneys.

With Law Offices of Mathys & Schneid, you will meet with us in our conference room or, if your injuries have impacted your ability to travel, at some other location of your choice. You will meet with one of our attorneys for as much times as needed, but the meetings usually last around 1 hour. The attorney will start by telling you know that there is no fee for the initial consultation and that everything discussed in the meeting is confidential whether or not you hire our firm.

Then we ask you a few background questions about yourself and how the car accident happened. We will review the police report, crash scene photographs and vehicle photographs with you if you have them. We will listen to your side of the story and ask you follow up questions. Then we will ask you about your injuries and what medical care you received. We will also ask you about what type of pre-existing medical conditions you have that might have some relevance on the injuries you sustained in the crash. We will also ask you about your car insurance coverage so we can evaluate whether you have an uninsured (UM) or underinsured (UIM) motorist coverage claim. Finally, we'll ask you how your medical bills are being paid and what health insurance you have.

Once we fully understand the nature of your accident and your injuries, we will decide whether or not we would like you to hire our firm. If you would like to hire us, we will explain the attorney-client contract to you and give you a chance to ask any questions you have about it. When you are ready to hire us, you will sign the attorney client contract and some medical records authorization forms. You will go home with copies of everything you sign during our meeting.

Please bring as much of the following documentation you can to your meeting with us: police report, insurance coverage information for your car (including UM and UIM coverage), car damage photographs, accident scene photographs, medical records, medical bills, health insurance information, x-ray CD-ROM's, letters from the other person's insurance company, letters from your insurance company, and anything else you feel is important to show us.

You should also seek medical treatment as soon as possible, or at least have appointments set before your attorney consultation. Do not wait for your attorney appointment to begin or continue getting the medical care you need.

The Law Offices of Mathys & Schneid has the experience to handle all types of car accident, motorcycle accident, truck accident, wrongful death, and other personal injury cases for clients in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, and Kendall Counties, including Chicago, Wheaton, Joliet, Geneva and the rest of the Chicagoland area.
