Relatives of officer killed in crash file wrongful death suit

Family members of an Illinois police officer who died in the line of duty have filed a civil suit in connection with the fatal 2013 accident. Reports show that the parents of the 29-year-old officer are seeking financial compensation through a wrongful death suit against an intoxicated motorist, that man's employer and the establishment where he allegedly became drunk. The family is seeking damages over $50,000 in connection with the loss of a loved one.

The lawsuit claims that the defendant's employer failed to identify him as a crash risk; that man had a previous DUI conviction in New Jersey. He was reportedly transporting equipment between work locations when he caused the fatal accident. In addition, the suit is seeking compensation through dram shop laws that hold bars accountable for allowing their patrons to become overly intoxicated.

The victim in this case was reportedly killed when his squad car was involved in a fatal accident with the defendant's pickup truck in October 2013. The at-fault driver reportedly ran off the road on Interstate 55, striking the victim's vehicle that was sitting in a median turn-around. Sadly, the man's K-9 partner also died in the wreck.

That defendant is currently facing allegations in criminal court, including aggravated driving under the influence, and reckless homicide. The defendant remains in custody after failing to post a $100,000 bond. His jury trial is slated to begin in mid-August.

Family members should never have to suffer such tragedy because of someone else's negligence. The officer in this case did not deserve to be killed by a drunk driver who lost control of his vehicle. The man's relatives deserve the opportunity to seek financial compensation for their pain and suffering and other woes.
