Driver faces DUI allegations after fatal expressway car accident

A 21-year-old man is facing aggravated DUI and murder charges, among other accusations, after allegedly causing a fatal crash while racing another driver. That individual had reached speeds of more than 100 mph while traveling on the Edens Expressway in Illinois, according to official reports. The fatal car accident occurred when the defendant rear-ended the 26-year-old male victim's vehicle during the early morning hours on March 30.

The defendant in the case suffered some injuries in the wreck. He was transported to local medical facilities after the collision, where physicians determined that he had been drinking and perhaps smoking marijuana before the wreck. A hearing in late April will determine the future of his criminal case.

Authorities say that the driver was racing another vehicle, reaching speeds of more than 150 mph, according to some witnesses. One of the vehicles struck a truck belonging to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The defendant's vehicle struck the victim's car when it changed lanes, causing both vehicles to spin out of control. The victim in the accident was pinned inside his vehicle and required extraction from emergency personnel. He was declared dead at the scene of the crash.

In addition to causing the wreck, the defendant is accused of allegedly fleeing the scene of the collision. An investigation identified the person to whom the vehicle was registered. The defendant was found in his home less than two miles away from the site of the fatal car accident.

Family members who have lost a loved one in an accident caused by a drunk driver or negligent motorist may be entitled to financial compensation for their woes. Monetary damages may be received for pain and suffering, wrongful death, emotional distress and a variety of other civil claims. An Illinois attorney may be able to provide additional information about victims' legal rights and options.
