Chicago Blue Line train derails, climbs escalator at O'Hare station

The team at the Law Offices of Mathys & Schneid is following news of a Chicago train derailment that resulted in 32 injuries this morning. Media reports indicate that a Chicago Transit Authority (CTA) Blue Line left the tracks at the O'Hare Airport station at about 2:50 a.m. It climbed up an escalator at end of the tracks. Photos of the accident show the end of a train car resting midway up the escalator, with debris scattered below.

The CTA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been called to investigate the accident. The cause has not been determined. The train came into the station at a high rate of speed, but investigators do not know why. A CTA spokesman said investigators will examine "everything," including signals and equipment problems, human error and "extenuating circumstances."

The 32 injured people were taken to four hospitals. The train operator was among those injured. An ER doctor at one hospital told media that patients had headaches, whiplash, neck pain and knee injuries from being tossed around the train cars as they derailed. The doctor also saw people suffering from emotional distress as a result of the accident.

Fortunately, no one died, and the accident happened during one of the lightest times for traffic at the station. But injuries from train derailments and other accidents can be painful, debilitating and long lasting. The injured people and their families will need answers as they work to recover.
