Study: Defective product recall info rarely reaches parents

New information shows that as few of 10 percent of parents are truly informed about the status of product recalls related to their children. The extraordinarily low return rate of dangerous products in Illinois and other states has caught the attention of several advocacy groups. These advocates have discovered that many companies and regulatory groups wait too long to issue product recalls, a failure that has led to the deaths of scores of children and infants. In general, two victims must suffer injury before a recall is issued.

Family gets $2 million settlement for abortion wrongful death

Family members of a woman who died because of physician error during an abortion procedure at Planned Parenthood in Illinois will receive $2 million through a settlement for their civil claim. The family members had brought a wrongful death suit against the reproductive health organization. Pro-life groups do not believe that the settlement is adequate, however, characterizing the settlement as "hush money."

Victims' families get $16 million for fatal accident in grain bin

Relatives of two teenagers who perished in a grain bin accident in northwestern Illinois in 2010 will receive a total of $16 million. News reports show that each family will receive $8 million after a jury trial in the matter. A lawsuit was brought against Consolidated Grain and Barge Company after the fatal accident. That company reportedly intends to appeal the civil verdict, arguing that it did not employ the teen workers and was not responsible for their safety. The company that owns the facility had already settled with the victims' relatives.

TV safety, dangerous products discussed after girl's death

A television tip-over accident that killed a 4-year-old Illinois girl has prompted new efforts to raise awareness about TV safety. National TV Safety Day was on Feb. 1. Experts are drawing attention to the dangerous products, explaining that television safety should be prioritized in families with young children.
