Professor's estate sues hospital for failure to diagnose

A medical malpractice suit against a Midwestern hospital has been settled. The suit was filed in Illinois' neighboring state of Iowa. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has agreed to pay $150,000 for its role in the death of a law professor in 2011. The suit charged physicians with failure to diagnose the fatal colon cancer that killed the victim. The decedent perished at age 75.

Husband's shooting death prompts wrongful death suit

A woman whose husband was shot in an altercation with police officers is seeking financial compensation in connection with the Illinois incident. The woman has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against both the officer who shot her husband and the department itself, according to news reports. The 51-year-old victim was reportedly shot in early January 2013, as officers responded to a complaint from a neighbor.

Widow files suit against fatigued driver in truck accident

A truck driver and his employers are facing a civil suit after the death of an Illinois state trooper in March 2013. The trooper's widow officially filed the lawsuit at the end of 2013; she is seeking financial damages from the individual driver, along with several other companies that were overseeing that man's performance and efforts. The 26-year old driver in the truck accident is facing criminal charges in connection with the matter, as federal officials allege that the man violated safety provisions designed to keep other motorists safe.

Businesses not cited for failure to remove ice and snow

The nation was struck by the so-called Polar Vortex at the beginning of the year, causing blustery, frigid weather throughout Illinois and other states. With this type of unusual weather event comes the increased risk of slip-and-fall injuries caused by improperly cleared sidewalks and other walkways. Did you know, however, that many Illinois businesses are not required to clear the sidewalks in front of their businesses? In fact, according to many experts, slip-and-fall accidents might actually decrease if business owners would simply leave the snow as-is, as that material is far safer than the slippery ice beneath.

Demolition worker suffers fatal accident, crushed by concrete

A demolition crew employee has died at work after he was struck by a chunk of concrete that fell from a building. The Illinois man, age 25, suffered catastrophic injuries in the fatal accident, which caused him to endure a crushed pelvis and serious internal bleeding. Authorities report that the man was working at a shopping center in Vernon Hills at the time of the incident.
