Springtime in Illinois: Officials begin motorcycle safety effort

Although winter weather may linger a little longer, it's officially spring. As such, Illinois public safety officials are starting to focus on safe driving for the summer months. With warmer weather, more and more people will take to the roads on their motorcycles. This means that Naperville motorists will have to take some precautions.

Officials from the Illinois Department of Transportation say that motorcycle accidents account for a disproportionate amount of motor vehicle fatalities. As part of the "Gear Up-Ride Smart" campaign, bikers throughout the state will be encouraged to make sure they are ready and fully trained to handle the unique aspects of riding a motorcycle. This means that motorcyclists will be encouraged to signal properly, drive at safe speeds and wear protective equipment.

Although motorcyclists can take precautions to protect themselves against accidents, they may not always be responsible for crashes. Drivers in larger vehicles can become distracted and fail to see motorcycles when changing lanes or turning.

All too often, bikers sustain serious or fatal injuries at the hands of drivers who fail to exercise reasonable caution or care. As this program is dedicating most of its efforts to motorcycle riders, it may also be beneficial to remind other drivers of their responsibilities as more motorcycles are on the road.

The unfortunate reality is that motor vehicle accidents will continue to happen in the Chicago area. Knowing this, anyone involved in an accident could benefit from a full understanding of their rights and responsibilities. The unique circumstances behind each accident could play a role in how individuals consider pursuing compensation with a personal injury claim.
