Pedestrian appears to be at fault in 3-car crash

Negligence by motor vehicle drivers is frequently the cause of pedestrian accidents and injuries. A situation where a pedestrian is responsible for causing a car accident is much less likely to happen, but it does occur.

Police in Naperville said a recent crash was not the fault of people in the drivers' seats of the three vehicles involved. The drivers were apparent victims in an accident with a determined pedestrian. The suspect was reportedly distracted and drunk as he weaved across several lanes of traffic on foot. The pedestrian was faulted for a chain-reaction collision that was believed to be simultaneously chatting on a cell phone while attempting to cross a busy highway.

According to official reports, the Naperville pedestrian stepped out into the path of cars on Warrenville Road. The incident took place after dark, around 6:40 p.m.

The suspect allegedly was engaged in a cell phone conversation when he stepped out on the four-lane highway. Witnesses say the pedestrian was difficult for drivers to notice because the man wore dark-colored clothing.

The 31-year-old man was knocked down by a car in traffic between Lucent Lane and Naperville Drive. The pedestrian reportedly fell down, bounced back up and continued on his way across the road. At the same time, the car that struck the pedestrian was hit from behind by two more vehicles.

Damage reports to the three cars were not included in public details of the pedestrian accident. Apparently none of the trio of drivers involved was seriously hurt.

The pedestrian told police that he was not injured but emergency medical crews transported the man to Edward Hospital to be on the safe side. Authorities at the scene said the unhurt pedestrian appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. Apparently, the trip to the hospital confirmed what investigating officials suspected. Police later charged the pedestrian with walking on a roadway while intoxicated.
