DuPage County driver's view blocked before crash

An accident involving a truck and car in DuPage County hospitalized a driver that police think was unable to see clearly through an Addison intersection.

The car accident victim was driving a Saturn, trying to make a left turn onto Route 53 when the car was hit by an allegedly speeding pickup truck.

Addison police say the Saturn was traveling from Dunteman just after 4 p.m. The car moved into the Route 53 intersection at the same time a dump truck was approaching the intersection along the main northbound highway. Reports say it is likely the dump truck, which was slowing to prepare for a turn onto Dunteman, blocked the Saturn driver's line of sight.

A second truck, speeding northbound in the middle lane of Route 53, smashed into the Saturn in mid-intersection.

Fire crews were required to extricate the seriously injured Saturn driver from his vehicle. Addison Fire District rescuers transported the man, described as an accident victim in his 20s with life-threatening injuries, to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital.

The driver of the full-size pickup was taken to GlenOaks Medical Center as a precautionary measure. Emergency responders said the driver was active following the crash. The pickup driver apparently got out of the crashed truck and was walking around the accident scene. The vehicles' operators were each traveling alone at the time of the crash.

Investigators from the DuPage County Accident Reconstruction Task Force closed Route 53 between Sidney and Fullerton Avenues for several hours.

Addison police believe it is possible the pickup truck could have been hidden from the Saturn driver's view by the dump truck. It is uncertain whether the obstructed line of sight would have any bearing on charges filed in the accident. Authorities think the pickup driver was speeding at the time of the crash. Police dismissed the idea that drugs or alcohol played any role in the injury accident.

Police did not state whether or what charges would be filed.
