2 injured after DUI police chase in DuPage County

The speed at which a DuPage County man was driving in Oak Brook, while under the alleged influence of alcohol, was at least double the posted 45 mph speed limit on Butterfield Road. Lombard police say it was only luck that kept the Round Lake Beach driver from causing a fatal car accident on a recent, early Saturday morning.

The 39-year-old drunk driving suspect was clocked driving a Chevrolet Trailblazer at 92 mph along Butterfield Road. Police near Highland Avenue pursued the speeding driver but could not stop him before the Chevy lost control and smashed into another vehicle.

Authorities followed the Trailblazer as it streaked through three traffic lights. The racing car abruptly veered across three traffic lanes at 22nd Street. The Chevy smashed into the back of an Audi.

Three accident victims -- the Audi's occupants, a 27-year-old man and 25-year-old woman, and the driver of the Trailblazer -- were transported to a nearby hospital. The drunk-driving suspect suffered a head laceration still visible at the bond hearing.

Police and media reports did not include the severity or updates of the couples' medical conditions. Authorities did indicate that the accident could have been much "more serious."

An alcohol breath test conducted on the injured, accused driver registered a preliminary reading of 0.27. The BAC reading is more than triple the 0.08 blood alcohol content allowed by state law. Prosecutors dug up a criminal past that showed the suspect was arrested and placed under court supervision for a DUI arrest two years ago.

Crash investigators are still trying to determine just how fast the Trailblazer was moving during the 1 a.m. police chase. Police estimated that the car hit speeds in excess of 100 mph as it zoomed eastbound along Butterfield Road.

A judge set bail for the Round Lake Beach driver at $150,000 and scheduled a follow-up hearing in DuPage County in early May.
