$1M bond set for suspected DUI driver in trooper car crash

A 42-year-old Brookfield man waited in the back of an Illinois State Police car in DuPage County on an early Saturday morning after being involved in a car accident near Addison on Interstate 290, the Eisenhower Expressway. The civilian was uninjured and invited by the trooper to sit in the rear of the patrol car to avoid the cold weather. The state trooper was nearby, outside the patrol car, investigating the non-injury car crash.

The trooper's vehicle was purposely parked in a blocking position in the left two lanes of the Eisenhower Expressway not far from Mill Road. The state police vehicle's emergency lights were active when a 2010 Chevrolet Impala rammed into the back of the state police car, fatally injuring the civilian inside.

Illinois State Police say the man who sought warmth inside the state patrol car was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, just over an hour after the rear-end collision occurred.

The driver who slammed into the back of the state police car and the trooper at the scene were also injured. The state patrolman was admitted to Loyola University Medical Center with what authorities thought might be a concussion. The trooper is expected to recover fully from the accident injuries.

The man charged with the crash near Addison was taken to Alexian Brothers Medical Center where he was treated for unspecified, non-life-threatening injuries.

DuPage County state prosecutors released a written statement saying the accused Chicago driver was drunk at the time of the collision. The 32-year-old suspect is charged with one count each of aggravated driving while under the influence involving death and aggravated DUI involving great bodily harm. The man is additionally charged with speeding, failing to avoid a crash and failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

The day after the accident, a DuPage County court ruled that the suspect was to be held on $1 million bond. A sum of $100,000 was ordered posted toward that bond.
