Alcohol use suspected in Plainfield U.S. 30 crash

Illinois State Police are pursuing evidence that drunk driving was the cause of a Sunday morning car accident in Plainfield. Tests will determine whether alcohol played a part in the two-vehicle crash that sent the drivers of both vehicles and two teenage passengers to the hospital.

Police reports allege that a 25-year-old driver on U.S. 30 failed to stop at a red light and struck the side of an SUV moving through the 127th Street intersection. The collision was forceful enough to shove the SUV into a utility pole. Plainfield fire crews were required to extricate both drivers from the wreckage.

The most severely injured victim was the 40-year-old woman who drove the SUV. The Plainfield woman was admitted initially to Rush Copley Medical Center in "extremely" critical condition. She was transferred later to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, due to the seriousness of her head injuries. By Monday, a friend of the victim's family reported the SUV driver's condition had "slightly" improved.

Two 17-year-old passengers in the SUV, the driver's son and a teen later identified as his girlfriend, were taken to separate hospitals. Both were treated and released by the following day.

State police reported that the Matteson 25-year-old suspected of causing the accident remains hospitalized. The extent of her injuries was not made public, although reports on the day of the crash indicate the woman was in fair conditions when she was transported to Edward Hospital in Naperville.

Media accounts the following day say the injured driver was under treatment at Rush Copley Medical Center.

So far, no traffic citations and no charges have been filed. Illinois State Police stated the investigation is ongoing.
