Sentencing delayed in speeding crash that killed 4

An Algonquin man, charged with killing four friends while driving drunk and speeding, has waited more than four years to find out his fate. The 29-year-old pleaded guilty in October 2010 to charges of reckless homicide for a car crash that took place in September 2007.

The accused was the driver of a car that police say was flying along a hilly road that neighbors say has seen other accidents Residents along the mile-and-a-half stretch of road say drivers purposely speed and skim the hilly road to try to "get air" that lifts a vehicle's wheels off the roadway.

Police said that was the apparent case for the accused driver, traveling with four classmates from Harper College in Palatine, Illinois. The group of friends was headed to a truck stop at Interstate 90 and Route 20 for an early breakfast.

Deputies from Kane County and members of an accident reconstruction team testified that the driver's Infiniti was speeding when it left the road, sailed 75 feet and slammed into a tree. The driver was severely injured, part of the reason his case has taken four years to resolve. His passengers, ages 18 to 20, died.

Earlier charges of aggravated drunk driving, additional counts of reckless homicide and a DUI misdemeanor were scrapped in favor of the Algonquin man's guilty plea last year to four counts of reckless homicide.

A Kane County judge has the option of sentencing the defendant to up to 14 years in prison or probation. Prosecutors have requested a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

Although he has been a legal U.S. resident since childhood, the guilty plea also places the Pakistan-native at risk for deportation.

  4. "Easy to talk to"

Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid were very professional and easy to talk to. Prior to working with them, my wife and I had no real experience with the legal system beyond a house closing, yet Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid explained the whole process to us very well. I knew that whenever I had a concern about our case or the legal system in general I could call their office or send an email and receive answers the same day... -Larry
