Drivers injured in truck-car collision on I-94

Part of Bishop Ford Freeway in Chicago was shut down for several hours after a tractor-trailer carrying flammable materials flipped over near Cottage Grove Avenue, sending two drivers to the hospital. Illinois State Police say charges are pending in the commercial vehicle accident.

The 18-wheeler was headed southbound along Interstate 94 on a late Friday night when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid hitting a vehicle braking in front of him. The driver of a Ford Mustang suddenly switched lanes and slowed ahead of the truck, allegedly to prevent becoming part of a separate car accident.

State troopers say the Freightliner truck driver sharply steered left, but was unable to stop or get out of the lane before crashing into the Ford. The collision sent the Mustang into a ditch along the right side of Interstate 94. The sudden action by the semi-trailer's driver caused the truck to flip over on the highway.

Emergency responders transported the car driver to Roseland Community Hospital. The tractor-trailer operator was taken to Advocate Trinity Hospital. State police said neither driver sustained life-threatening injuries.

Hazardous materials crews were called to the scene to straighten the overturned carrier. The southbound side of Bishop Ford Freeway was closed from the time crews arrived at the 11:15 p.m. crash until 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.

Cleanup workers said none of the flammable materials carried on board the truck were spilled during or after the accident.

State police did not make public which charges would be brought as a result of the crash. Authorities also did not specify whether one or both drivers would receive citations.
