Illinois police officers injured in car chase

After responding to reports of a retail theft, three officers were injured in a subsequent chase and car accident that state police feared could have been much more serious.

At about 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23, police responded to a call about a man that was allegedly attempting to steal merchandise, such as a DVD player, from a local drug store chain. After confronting the man outside, he dropped the merchandise and ran to his vehicle, which had the engine turned on. While attempting to drive away, the man pinned one officer between his vehicle and another parked just beside it.

Following the first injury, the man attempted to flee and led officers on a chase along several major roads, including Jefferson Street and Route 59 in Shorewood. Suddenly, the vehicle braked, causing two squad cars to rear-end it. In this accident, both a male and female officer was injured. While the male officer required treatment at a local hospital, the female officer was inspected and cleared at the scene, with what authorities called only minor injuries.

Police were finally able to apprehend the man when an officer positioned his vehicle so that the man could not exit his own. During the arrest, responding state police found that the man was only a month from finishing parole on a previous sentence for driving with a suspended license. He was charged with assault on an officer, theft and once again driving with a suspended license.

Police were thankful that the injuries sustained were not more severe, but at least one patrol car will need considerable repairs and another may be unsalvageable.

  4. "Easy to talk to"

Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid were very professional and easy to talk to. Prior to working with them, my wife and I had no real experience with the legal system beyond a house closing, yet Mr. Mathys and Mr. Schneid explained the whole process to us very well. I knew that whenever I had a concern about our case or the legal system in general I could call their office or send an email and receive answers the same day... -Larry

Not long ago I was involved in a car accident where I was hit by a gravel truck at an intersection. They went to bat for me with the trucking company's insurance and got me a settlement. I would definitely recommend them to my family and friends. -Dan H.
