Fatal Traffic Accidents: Illinois 2016 Update

Unfortunately, hundreds of people are killed on Illinois roadways each year. 2016 is no exception, as there have already been many fatalities and the calendar has just flipped to March.

In the article below, we look at the statistics behind these fatalities, and then provide guidance about what you can do if you have lost a loved one in an car crash or other type of accident.

Fatal Accidents: A Look At The Statistics

In the first two months of the year, there have already been six fatalities in DuPage County and seven fatalities in Will County. This puts these counties on pace to reach 36 and 42 fatalities (respectively) by the end of 2016. At the state level, there have already been 152 fatalities in Illinois in 2016. If the current pace continues, there will be 912 deaths by the end of the year. Unfortunately, this pace can be difficult to predict to do extreme fluctuations that can occur on major holidays and other particular dates that are notorious for being dangerous.

So how do these numbers compare to previous years? According to state-level statistics provided by the Illinois Department of Transportation, the numbers are as follows:

Year Fatalities
2015 1012
214 924
2013 991
2012 956
2011 918

As this data shows, during the last five years, there has been an average of 960 fatalities each year. While it looks as though 2016 may be on pace to be one of the safer years in recent memory, the large spike in fatalities that occurred in 2015 shows that it is still quite dangerous out there and that safety is not a certainty.

How To Take Action After Losing A Loved One

As you likely know, getting the help of an attorney is vital, so finding an attorney is your first order of business. While making your choice of attorney, do not sign anything presented to you by an insurance company or other party — you may be signing away your rights and your ability to seek justice for your loved one!

After you have hired an attorney, he or she will handle the bulk of the process on your behalf. Even with the lawyer’s help, you will still likely have many questions. To help with that, we have created this guide that answers some of the most commonly asked questions regarding wrongful death cases in Illinois.
